The surface of my works is textured, partly from the way in which I prepare the surface, and partly due to the style of painting, with thick paint applied with energy. This is deliberate, as I want to create works in which the "hand of the artist" is evident. Soft lighting is important when hanging, enhancing the color and energy, and minimizing the surface texture. This work is about contrasts of color, and also the juxtaposition of the hard edges of the house contrasted against the soft shapes of the lawn ornaments and the almost ethereal woods in the right background. I brightened up the lawn and  parts of the house, and darkened the sky to amplify the overall "light vs. shadow" quality. I especially like the woods and the foliage at the right, which are rendered as mere gestures with the brush.

Getting to Know Robert

Robert Hofherr avoids depicting a landscape exactly as he sees it or as the viewer might expect. Instead, he enjoys reimagining landscapes and painting his pieces indoors at a fairly rapid pace. The works of French Fauve artists Maurice de Vlaminck and André Derain initially got him interested in painting, and also influenced his decision to not use grey in his works. During his free time he enjoys spending time with his kids, walking his dogs and taking road trips to out-of-way places in the mid-Atlantic region. He currently lives in Maryland.
