Artwork

"A container ship is nearly docked at port in Charleston, South Carolina, with cranes visible in the background," says artist Elliot Coatney. "The scene is presented in near-perfect profile and cropped closely to focus on the colorful, graphic, geometric containers. The quirky composition, the logos, and the colors are pop art-inspired, but rendering the scene with loose playful brushstrokes makes for a fun, unusual mashup of artistic strands."

Elliot Coatney

Blowing Rock, North Carolina

Artist Elliot Coatney creates warm, impressionist landscapes inspired by his surroundings in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. He began drawing and painting in watercolor at a young age under the direction of his grandmother, an amateur painter. Throughout his school years, he learned the art trade as a studio assistant for a local painter. Today, he works from a home studio in the mountains with old warped hardwood floors covered in paint splatters. "It's cramped and cluttered, but somehow there's always room for me and my children who love to join me with their paints and brushes and other creative projects," says Elliot. His artwork has been featured in juried shows throughout the southeast, including at the North Carolina Museum of Art and the Southern Appalachian Artist Guild.

This is now in my entry, and I like how this piece reminds me of how it feels to walk through an art gallery. It's very calming. Even more depth in person. Keep up the good work!
