Contemporary abstraction exploring techniques of aerosol painting, stenciling, charring and sanding on the wood surface. Rich palette of earth tones, blue, beige and terracotta red. Expressionist marks paired with precise line work. Melisa says she drew inspiration from the work of Agnes Martin, Gerhard Richter and Sterling Ruby.
The natural world is the blueprint for Melisa’s work, while allusions to past and contemporary culture inform its development. She approaches her artwork by developing her own hybridization of artistic practices. Melisa relies on commercial tools such as blow torches and electrical sanders to create her work, in addition to other labor-intensive methods. By exploring the assimilation of aerosol painting, pyrography, and sanding on wood, Melisa produces unique abstract art that is simultaneously geometric and organic.
