Artist Samuel Pretorius depicts an impressionist scene in Sodermalm, just outside of Tantolunden park. A beautiful secluded bright yellow cottage hides among the lush trees and bushes. "It seemed out of place in a big city like Stockholm. The pathway was very quiet and peaceful right next to the park," says Samuel. The boldness of the bright red fence against the house and lush foliage appears striking and eye-catching.

Artist Samuel Pretorius paints impressionist landscapes that evoke quiet nostalgia. He invariably works with direct source material in representing actual locations he documents through his photographs. "I aim to create fleeting images that you long to see again, a landscape that you will never forget, or a place you yearn to visit, captured in a few brush strokes to hold on to that memory forever," says Samuel. Originally from South Africa, he comes from a family of artists who encouraged him early to paint and draw. In primary school, his work was included in a national exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum. While growing up, his art education came from exhibiting at local art galleries, participating in open markets and plein air painting events, and joining monthly exhibitions. Recently becoming a US citizen, Samuel decided to dedicate a home studio space to fulfill his passion for painting. His well-lit area, often supervised by his Siamese cat, allows him to paint any time of the day. Outside the creative industry, Samuel enjoys exploring the world's beauty and creating code as a software developer.
