I wanted to create a painting with movement and excitement. This was done more with energetic black and grays rather than bright contrasting colors. The soft blues act as a foil and tone down the energy to a pleasant theme. Touches of pale naples yellow also add a calming color. This painting was done with variety of brushes, scumbling layers of colors.
After painting for years out of the family room of his home, Robert took the plunge and built an addition to his home for proper studio space. He works in two very different styles, producing both color-blocked abstracts and realist landscapes. Robert begins each painting by creating a thumbnail value sketch to establish a composition. Each piece reflects his mood, but whether energetic or placid, the colors must always be harmonious. Robert’s technique uses mostly brushes with the occasional addition of palette knives to create subtle surface texture.
