Gestural abstraction mixing red, violet, peach, brown, blue, green and white in thick layers. "I'm influenced by my daily surroundings, whether it's nature, a historical building or the ocean," says Hilma. "I can see beauty in nearly everything. I build up energetic surfaces that are rich with texture and emotion."

Hilma Koelman has traveled the world, but always found herself coming back to the ocean. Living in Curacao, a tropical island in the Caribbean, provides endless inspiration for her art, from the deep turquoise of the water to the colorful buildings of the island. She uses her abstract paintings to express her passion and energy. Hilma may go through states of happiness, struggling, or insecurity when she’s creating a work of art, but she always arrives at a feeling of satisfaction, at which point she knows the painting is finished.
