"Aspen trees are a joy and a challenge to paint," says Robert. "This painting was more so of a challenge because the trees are backlit, therefore, they are in shadow. It was important for me to balance the shadow colors which are cooler with the warmer sunlit areas. Layers of harmonious colors were used to achieve this balance."

Getting to Know Robert

After painting for years out of the family room of his home, Robert took the plunge and built an addition to his home for proper studio space. He works in two very different styles, producing both color-blocked abstracts and realist landscapes. Robert begins each painting by creating a thumbnail value sketch to establish a composition. Each piece reflects his mood, but whether energetic or placid, the colors must always be harmonious. Robert’s technique uses mostly brushes with the occasional addition of palette knives to create subtle surface texture.
