A leaf-strewn path elegantly cuts through a golden forest of aspen trees. A break among the treetops shows a welcome view of a pale blue sky. Artist Robert Pennor explains his process, "after I applied texture to the canvas with modeling paste and gesso, I toned it with a pale yellow ochre and burnt sienna mixture. I used a sea sponge, some palette knives, and brushes to apply the paint."

Robert Pennor

Bolingbrook, Illinois

After painting for years out of the family room of his home, Robert took the plunge and built an addition to his home for proper studio space. He works in two very different styles, producing both color-blocked abstracts and realist landscapes. Robert begins each painting by creating a thumbnail value sketch to establish a composition. Each piece reflects his mood, but whether energetic or placid, the colors must always be harmonious. Robert’s technique uses mostly brushes with the occasional addition of palette knives to create subtle surface texture.
