A stand of aspens glow in late afternoon light. "Harmony of colors and a limited palette give this painting a warm, happy feeling," says Robert. The warm colors contrast with the cooler colors of the trees. A natural sponge was used for the distant leaves. Glazes of yellow ochre, raw sienna and burnt umber create depth.

Getting to Know Robert

After painting for years out of the family room of his home, Robert took the plunge and built an addition to his home for proper studio space. He works in two very different styles, producing both color-blocked abstracts and realist landscapes. Robert begins each painting by creating a thumbnail value sketch to establish a composition. Each piece reflects his mood, but whether energetic or placid, the colors must always be harmonious. Robert’s technique uses mostly brushes with the occasional addition of palette knives to create subtle surface texture.
