Jo Mackenzie
Adamant, Vermont

Jo Mackenzie is always on the prowl for small moments that take her breath away. Finding these moments requires paying attention to images throughout the day that might otherwise pass by unnoticed. But when the moment flashes, she goes straight to the easel and gets to work. Jo uses the NOTAN method of value painting to determine overall value patterns before painting. She adds layers and uses neutral colors to make the primary colors stronger in relationship to the overall value patterns in the composition. Jo loves watercolor so much that she always says, "I like to kiss it behind the school yard fence and write its name in all my notebooks." You could say she has an undying "puppy love" for watercolor. Fun fact: Jo wrote a book called Three Step Watercolors to show others how to work using her same method for success.

Watercolor painting

Watercolor paint is made of pigments suspended in a water-based solution. Watercolor, which refers to both the medium and the finished artwork, is typically applied to paper. It is translucent, and appears luminous on the surface of the paper. Watercolor painting is a very old medium, dating back to the Renaissance when it was used primarily for botanical and wildlife illustration.

Paper is a very common surface for all types of artwork, including photography, printmaking, drawing and painting. Art paper varies in thickness and color. Read the notes section to learn more about the paper used to create this artwork. If not noted as framed, most paper artwork will require framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
