Melinda Laszczynski
Houston, Texas

After graduating from the Cleveland Institute of Art, Melinda Laszczynski drove to Houston for graduate school. She was quickly captivated by the potent colors and brightness of the Texas landscape and began her Succulent Summers series, paying tribute to the beautifully wonky shapes of the local cacti. Melinda handmakes the pots and often paints the same plant more than once, capturing it during different stages of growth. While leans toward an abstract aesthetic, she strives for a balance between accurately depicting things and playing with color and pattern. Fun fact: Melinda enjoys baking, especially complicated recipes from scratch. She recently made cupcakes that looked like potted cacti!

Comments About This Piece

This is a painting of two of the cacti in my collection, lit with an extreme shadow against a wall. It is watercolor, gouache, and iridescent medium on Arches paper. This piece is on heavyweight paper and will need a frame for display.

Watercolor painting

Watercolor paint is made of pigments suspended in a water-based solution. Watercolor, which refers to both the medium and the finished artwork, is typically applied to paper. It is translucent, and appears luminous on the surface of the paper. Watercolor painting is a very old medium, dating back to the Renaissance when it was used primarily for botanical and wildlife illustration.

Paper

Paper is a very common surface for all types of artwork, including photography, printmaking, drawing and painting. Art paper varies in thickness and color. Read the notes section to learn more about the paper used to create this artwork. If not noted as framed, most paper artwork will require framing.

One-of-a-kind

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
