Charles Ash
Santa Fe, New Mexico

Charles Ash creates watercolor paintings that capture shadow, form and space. He loves working quickly with paint, looking for the spontaneity and happy accidents that occur with a rough watercolor paper. He currently lives in New Mexico and is interested in Art Noveau, Japanese motifs and Chinese watercolors. When he''s not painting, Charles works as an architect.

I was asked by a client what was the one book I would recommend for someone just starting paint. My immediate response was nothing... learn by doing, screwing up, succeeding, etc... But she wanted a book, so I told her start with Robert Henri's "The Art Spirit".

When I paint the skies I try to spend no spend more than 30 seconds to keep the fresh, pure colors

Thank you... the great thing about painting in New Mexico is the light, color of the sky and the forms.

I love the way your paintings look as a whole, but I especially admire your facility with painting light (and shadows) and depicting wonderfully textured skies.

I love this watercolor. It reminds me of the peacefulness of winter. It is currently being framed, but I cannot wait to hang it in my home.

I had some pleasant news this morning. Back in November I responded to a "call ...for artists" seeking images for the local phone book. I didn't hear anything and soon forgot all about it. I received an email this morning and one of my pieces (San Miguel)will be the cover and two more (one of those is Canyon Road In June)will be in the gallery collection. No money, but great free publicity.

Comments About This Piece

A landscape recalling the cottonwood stands along the Rio Grande River. Cottonwood groves along the rivers in New Mexico are centers of food, shelter and a place of variety for flora and fauna. In the fall, the trees turn into ribbons of yellow, gold and red. This piece is on heavyweight paper and will need a frame for display.

Watercolor painting

Watercolor paint is made of pigments suspended in a water-based solution. Watercolor, which refers to both the medium and the finished artwork, is typically applied to paper. It is translucent, and appears luminous on the surface of the paper. Watercolor painting is a very old medium, dating back to the Renaissance when it was used primarily for botanical and wildlife illustration.

Paper is a very common surface for all types of artwork, including photography, printmaking, drawing and painting. Art paper varies in thickness and color. Read the notes section to learn more about the paper used to create this artwork. If not noted as framed, most paper artwork will require framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
