Lucinda Shmulsky
New Marlborough, Massachusetts

Lucinda Shmulsky’s studio sprawls out into four areas of her New Malborough, Massachusetts home, including the woodshed, garage, and cellar. The rooms are filled with rustic antiques and metal parts, which she collects to create her unique sculptures. Like the readymades of the early 20th century, Lucinda reworks ordinary objects into art. However, unlike Marcel Duchamp, who showed an indifference towards the objects he choose, Lucinda’s sculptures demonstrate an appreciation and reverence for the past. She is fascinated by the history of the objects she happens upon, such as the origin of the mandolin, and the antique bellows once used by blacksmiths. She personifies them to represent something quaint and nostalgic about the past, something lost in our high-tech, fast-moving present. They are a tribute to American industrialism, with an appropriate sense of kitsch and humor.

Comments About This Piece

This sculpture was inspired by the shape of the two antique mandolines coupled with the French term of endearment: “mon petit chou” or “my little cabbage.” However, to be fair in France there is a specialty pastry called a “chou” short for “chou a la crème” or "my little cream puff." The cooking utensil referred to as a mandoline originated in Italy and France. It was given the name similar to the musical instrument, because the first versions had stiff strings instead of metal blades and chefs had to hold the mandoline tight against their chest to slice the cabbage. It had the appearance of playing the mandolin while cooking in the kitchen. Due to the elongated trapezoid shapes, both mandolines are installed upside down to infer two figures and the small one is also reversed front to back for aesthetic reasons.

I added the two vintage silver plates in accordance with the size of the two mandolines. The wrought iron plant hanger curves to the right to lead your eye to the stroller handle, which is another wrought iron angle bracket. The wood moulding was added to enhance the stroller and small metal wheels were added as embellishments. Therefore, this is a combination of old and new parts.

The back has a brass D hook at the center of gravity and the hanging nail or screw in the wall has to project out approximately 1” to catch the hanging bracket on the back because of the curvature of the head of the taller maternal figure.

The sculpture measures 46"H x 29"W x6"D. The sculpture weighs about 20 pounds.
