Lucinda Shmulsky
New Marlborough, Massachusetts

Lucinda Shmulsky’s studio sprawls out into four areas of her New Malborough, Massachusetts home, including the woodshed, garage, and cellar. The rooms are filled with rustic antiques and metal parts, which she collects to create her unique sculptures. Like the readymades of the early 20th century, Lucinda reworks ordinary objects into art. However, unlike Marcel Duchamp, who showed an indifference towards the objects he choose, Lucinda’s sculptures demonstrate an appreciation and reverence for the past. She is fascinated by the history of the objects she happens upon, such as the origin of the mandolin, and the antique bellows once used by blacksmiths. She personifies them to represent something quaint and nostalgic about the past, something lost in our high-tech, fast-moving present. They are a tribute to American industrialism, with an appropriate sense of kitsch and humor.

Comments About This Piece

This is a free standing sculpture with a front side and a back side appropriate for placement on a table with a wall behind it.

This sculpture was inspired by finding the antique bootjack that suggests the image of the head of a horse or donkey; thus the name “Stubborn.” The old fashioned paper roll cutter supports the head with the attachment of an antique split cast iron plate on the back. A small pronged hand tool serves as his tail. A brass name plate is visible on the dark wood base.

The sculpture measures 20"H x 34"W x 8"D. It weighs about 18 pounds.
