Lucinda Shmulsky
New Marlborough, Massachusetts

Lucinda Shmulsky’s studio sprawls out into four areas of her New Malborough, Massachusetts home, including the woodshed, garage, and cellar. The rooms are filled with rustic antiques and metal parts, which she collects to create her unique sculptures. Like the readymades of the early 20th century, Lucinda reworks ordinary objects into art. However, unlike Marcel Duchamp, who showed an indifference towards the objects he choose, Lucinda’s sculptures demonstrate an appreciation and reverence for the past. She is fascinated by the history of the objects she happens upon, such as the origin of the mandolin, and the antique bellows once used by blacksmiths. She personifies them to represent something quaint and nostalgic about the past, something lost in our high-tech, fast-moving present. They are a tribute to American industrialism, with an appropriate sense of kitsch and humor.

Comments About This Piece

“Bootleg” was inspired by the unique combination of the antique blacksmith bellows used in concert with a cooper’s plane topped off with two iron cant hooks. The rare antique bellows with a Victorian industrial heritage come complete with a few cracks commensurate with age; they are made of wood, leather, iron, rivets and a metal foot plate. The bellows were used by blacksmiths and gunsmiths to deliver additional air to the fuel source, raising the rate of combustion and therefore the heat output essential for foundry work.

The cooper’s plane was used when making whiskey barrels. The barrel maker, known as the cooper, could precisely handcraft oak staves slightly cupped inside and beveled to fit together so no whiskey would be lost during storage. The blacksmith fashioned the metal hoops to hold the staves in place.

The antique log rolling cant hooks were made by C.S. Amidon & Sons and were used by loggers, saw mill operators and river drivers.

The intent in creating “Bootleg” was to preserve the integrity of the rare antique pieces; yet, assemble them in such a way that a sense of history would emanate from them in a delightful and amusing manner.

The sculpture measures 28"H x 16"W x 26"D. It weighs about 32 pounds.
