Sarah Beth Goncarova
Woodbridge, Connecticut

Sarah Beth Goncarova uses a variety of techniques to convey the importance of very contemporary dilemmas. Her hushed, thick brush strokes portray barren environments, bold textures, or photorealistic paintings in a state of flux. The viewer is invited into her paintings to join her in social activism that ranges from women's rights to environmentalism.

On the Rainy Season Series: It has always been more than just raindrops on a pane of glass. As this series evolves, so too does it cause me to grow with it. From the beginning this series has been one of experimentation, of pushing myself to grow, to see and express ideas in new ways. These pieces speak of environmental degradation and of how overdevelopment affects our perception. They show the world as one sees it separated by a piece of glass—being able to see it, but not be a part of it: are we doomed to be an observer in our own world? A conflict arises, because—as beautiful and atmospheric the rain is—it is damned miserable to be in. That pane of glass protects us from the cold and the wet, and why would we want to be in the rain anyway? Rainy Season continues the theme of environmental activism that appears throughout my work, but in a more personal, conflicted, and nuanced way.

Just got word that I've been accepted into the 50-50 show at Pacifica Art Center, juried by esteemed arts writer DeWitt Chang. For the show, the artists will each be making 50 small pieces in 50 days! I feel so honored to be chosen to participate in the show, and it is going to be a wonderful challenge. Wish me luck!

Dear Jeanne, Thank you so much for the thank you note! It warms my heart to know that you like it so much! Kindly yours, Sarah Beth

Sarah - I received your painting, Sunday III, yesterday and I am thrilled! The pc screen certainly didn't do it justice. I wanted a piece that evoked peace and calm and was also drawn to this one as it reminds me of the northern landscapes where I grew up. Thank you so much for your beautiful work. Jeanne

Sarah Beth Goncarova 12/10/2010 | 5:59 PM

Thanks! The texture of the heavy watercolor paper that I use is smoother than cotton or linen canvas. In this particular piece, you don’t really see the texture of the paper underneath at all. It has many layers of underpainting that has created a rich texture, but not so much that it is distracting. As for framing. It needs to have a frame that has a backing board (the cardboard on the back for support), and be behind glass or plexi-glass. Any frame that has glass or plexi-glass comes with the cardboard backing board. Some collectors prefer to top-mount the works on paper to show off the edges, while others like the look of 2-3 inch matte, both ways look great. This piece would fit a ready-made frame of 24” x 32” or larger. Hope this helps, and please let me know if you have any more questions! Thanks so much, again. Orchard slope is one of my favorites so I am very glad you like it!

A Poster 12/10/2010 | 3:18 PM

Would you please explain the texture of oil on paper vs canvas? I love Orchard Slope, but I'm having a hard time picturing the medium. Would I still be able to frame in a traditional gilt frame?

Sarah Beth Goncarova 11/26/2010 | 12:54 AM

Thanks so much!

You have nice art work

Sarah Beth Goncarova 10/27/2010 | 6:01 PM

Hi Claire, Thanks for checking out the book online! It might be that I had to pdf the book to upload, plus there might be a difference in colors with the RGB to CMYK transfer. It could also be the background colors on the sites, which might affect the brightness. I know ugallery uses a bright white background, and on my own site I use a muted grey, which may make the piece look not-as-bright. I hope this helps! The third place to view ptgs would be on www.goncarova.com. Go to portfolio, then paintings and that comes up with a chronological list of thumbnails from which you can navigate around. If there's a specific painting you'd like to look at more closely, just let me know!

C Cronin 10/27/2010 | 3:07 PM

Hi Sarah, I have a question about the actual brightness of the paintings. I was looking at your book on line and certain paintings seem completely different than on this UGallery site. Is there a third place to view them? thanks Claire

Thank you for your interest in my work! Blueberry Field I and At Woods Edge are still available, thanks for asking!

S Gabriel 6/27/2009 | 3:44 PM

Sarah, I love your work. Are At Wood's Edge and Blueberry Field I still available?

Sarah Beth Goncarova 4/9/2009 | 8:48 PM

You have good eyes - I think that the white background on the Ugallery website makes the colors look brighter than the muted background tones of my website. In real life the colors look as bright as the Ugallery site. Birthday Day is still for sale, thanks for asking!

CK 4/9/2009 | 6:50 PM

My aunt and uncle have collected his work for quite a while, it's magnificent. Anyhow, is your painting "Birthday Day" still for sale? And if so, I noticed that the colors (at least on this screen) appear more muted on your personal website. What site would you say best depicts the colors?

Sarah Beth Goncarova 4/9/2009 | 4:23 PM

Thank you, I am a fan of WK's work!

CK 4/9/2009 | 4:17 PM

I love you work, fan of Wolf Kahn by any chance?
