About this artwork

A woman in black walks down a narrow street in Marrakesh, Morocco. The city is known for its red and ochre walls, states artist Hadley Northrop. The sun shines at the end of the street, showing the changing colors of the sandstone and emphasizing the figure's silhouette. Hadley had not been to Morocco herself, but the source image from a friend reminded her of John Singer Sargent's Venice paintings. It was the chance to travel vicariously a little, pay homage to Sargent, and show the calm and confidence of a happily traveling friend.
