Artist

Mary Pratt
Buford, Georgia

Mary Pratt, a Georgia based artist, is known for her tranquil oil paintings that capture the unique personalities of both people and animals with a jovial poise. Her soft and ethereal color palette is invigorated with the zest of bright colors. These colors, combined with her compositional choices, rekindle a childhood magic and joyful emotional response. From John Singer Sargent and Japanese geishas to nostalgic family memories and the state of Georgia, her style is nuanced by a range of inspirations. Her fascination for the beauty of the Japanese geisha pervades particularly in her paintings of female figures. The personal edge that Mary brings to each painting alters and enhances recognizable subject matter, cultivating an imaginative visual experience.

No worries Karen. Moving is a busy time. I'm hoping I will see photos of your home when it's put together and you've settled in! Happy you love the colors in "Egret"! Best to you; safe moving! Mary

Mary, sorry I haven't written before to let you know I received Egret with the speed of light. I couldn't believe it arrived so quickly. Love the colors. Scheduled to close on April 20th and move in April 25th. Can't wait to see all your beautiful art on my walls. Karen

Mary Pratt 3/29/2017 | 6:02 PM

Ahhhhh Karen!!! Today I mailed Egret so you should be receiving the box soon! I am so excited and grateful for your support. We have the geisha obsession in common. I have loved the geisha since I was a little girl. Traveled with the girlscouts on a train to NYC and bought a geisha doll at The United Nations Building. I guess I was six. Thank you from my heart!!!!!Your new geisha is on the easel!

K Julian purchased this artwork. 3/29/2017 | 3:00 PM

Mary, I recently received Flamingo Cha Cha and Water Baby 2. Absolutely love them both as I had no doubt I would. When I first started purchasing your work, it was very reassuring to find that your art looks exactly the same in person as it does on U Gallery's website. The colors are very true. Of course, now that I own so many of your pieces, I don't need that reassurance. As you know I just purchased Egret and can't wait for it to arrive. And thank you for the "tease" of the Geisha piece I've commissioned you to do. As we've discussed, I'm somewhat obsessed with Geishas and I know I will be thrilled with the end result. All my best, Karen

Karen, I'm excited about your new home and very happy "Flamingo Cha Cha" will be a focal point. I've just joined a book club. Book lovers are usually art lovers!! I have the photos you sent ready to chat about during our conference call! I am brainstorming about the upcoming piece! Best to you! Mary

K Julian 2/24/2017 | 4:20 PM

Mary, Flamingo Cha Cha will hang in a very large art niche on the first floor of my new house that is situated such that I will pass by it many, many times a day. It's such a colorful and happy piece. I'm hosting my book club not too long after I move in and look forward to them being able to view all the beautiful pieces I have purchased from you. Karen

Mary Pratt 2/22/2017 | 11:00 PM

Hi Karen! I feel happy!! Thanks, your patronage is greatly appreciated!! I wonder where "Pink Flamingo" will hang?!

Hi Mary,

Karen, Today I mailed the certificate of authenticity for "Geisha Light". After researching oil paintings placed in bathrooms, I also added that information. Best, Mary

Mary Pratt 1/22/2017 | 3:52 AM

Hi Karen, So sorry I missed placing the certificate of authenticity in the box, however I am very happy you love the work. On Monday I will mail the certificate of authenticity and my recommendations regarding oil paintings hanging in a bathroom. I've had an oil painting in my bathroom for years and see no ill effects. I will send whatever information I can find with the certificate . I am truly honored my work pleases you! With Best Regards, Mary

K Julian 1/21/2017 | 5:09 PM

Mary, I wanted to let you know that Purple Vase and Geisha Light arrived safely today. The shipping packaging is top notch and necessary. After staring at small "on-line" versions of these paintings, it's thrilling to see them full size, in person in all their glory. After endlessly searching for pieces of art that speak to me, I'm a little embarrassed by how besotted I have become with your work. A friend was present when I unpacked Geisha Light. She said the smile that appeared on my face when I saw it touched her. I can't wait for my new home to be completed. I know exactly where each of your pieces will be hung. I did not find a certificate of authenticity with Geisha Light. Would you mind mailing one to me? I have a niche wall directly behind my soaker tub in my very large bathroom. I need to place a 30 x 60 or slightly smaller piece of art there with colors that will transition well with Geisha in White along with a hint of the beige/camel/greige colors from purple vase. Once I realized it would be awkward/unattractive to leave this large niche blank, I soon became aware that not all subject matter belongs in a bathroom setting. It also caused me to read a great deal about putting oil paintings in bathrooms even if you are religious about running vents. Some comments I read said it would be almost sacrilege to put an artists work in a bathroom. Others swear they have had oils in their bathroom for years with no apparent ill effects. I'm not looking for nor worried about guarantees, but I wondered if you have any advice/thoughts about oil paintings in large bathrooms you would include in the envelope you mail the certificate of authenticity in. I will certainly understand if you choose not to. Thank you for my beautiful paintings. Karen

Hi Karen, I am without words which for me is unusual. Your appreciation for my work is so appreciated. For an artist, three paintings sent to the same patron is akin to being on "cloud nine". Best of luck in your new home. It is my honor to have my work grace your walls!!! Kindly, Mary

K Julian 1/13/2017 | 5:16 PM

Hello Mary. I recently received Geisha in White and am thrilled that in person it is exactly what I expected. I'm building a new house and this will be beautiful in my master bedroom. I love the serenity the piece exudes. Now that I have my first piece of yours in my hands, I just this minute completed another transaction with U Gallery purchasing your "Purple Vase" and "Geisha Light". Your beautiful pieces will be showcased in my new home and I know I and others will enjoy them for years to come. I have a fabulous designer who was not aware of your work. I ran the pieces I picked of yours by her (not that it would have mattered what she said... because I was smitten by them) and she fell in love with your work as well. I'm sure she will be showing your work to clients in the future. I feel I have a good eye but since my ability to draw/paint is at the stick figure level, I am in awe of your talent. Thank you and I will continue to watch your work with great interest. Karen

Mary Pratt- I received your beautiful "Red" on Monday and when I walk into my living room, where she hangs, it literally takes my breath away. You have such a lightness to your painting. Comments About This Piece

The geisha inspired this piece. Bright yellow dominates the palette with cadmium red and pink to compliment. Gold leaf is presented underneath the oil paint and peeks through. Each geisha is gazing in the opposite direction, capturing a personal moment. The piece is on a gallery wrapped canvas and the painting continues around the sides. It comes varnished and ready to hang.

Oil painting

Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!

Stretched linen

Linen fabric is the preferred surface for paintings. Linen is favored over cotton for its strength, durability and archival integrity. Linen is a rare surface in the United States because of its high cost. When a linen artwork is labeled stretched, it means the linen has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched linen artwork typically does not require framing.

One-of-a-kind

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
