Warren Keating
Santa Fe, New Mexico

Warren Keating''s paintings start with documentation. He captures subjects on video from birds-eye views, digitizes the film on his computer and, finally, paints them on canvas in an active style he describes as Pixel Impressionism. He merges artistic elements of the 20th Century with 21st Century technology. Warren credits Futurism as well as Richard Diebenkorn and Willem de Kooning as influences in his paintings. Fun fact: Warren’s inspiration for this series came from a vacation to Paris where he photographed passersby from his hotel balcony in Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

Evan, you are driving me nuts, as well; you're getting my favorite pieces, before I can show them to anyone else. Let me know when my suite is ready; it is time for you to get an aerial portrait.

Warren I am really getting to despise you. You just posted a new painting that I must have. We are getting to the point where you should just move in here and cover all of my walls!!!

Thank you, Mr. Flaschen for your wonderfully crafted comments and for becoming an avid collector of my work. Your words have really summed up very succinctly and thoughtfully what I am intending to achieve with each painting.

Thank you so much, Jwoodrome! When I saw this couple from my balcony, I knew this Paris scene had to be painted.

The smoking Parisians look so much like my sister and her husband, who lived in Paris for several years. I hope that me or someone in my family can buy this someday when we can budget the funds. It is an awesome work!

Warren Keating 2/15/2013 | 11:03 AM

Thank you for your message, Nance. I have this large piece, depicting an older couple: Also, I have reference of many old couples from which I can make a commissioned painting. Let me know your preferred size, and I can come up with something for you.

I'm looking for a piece with an old man and woman.

This painting which I have named "Michael's Special Day" captures a moment in time which my son & I treasure. We love it. Michael has hung this painting near another one Warren Keating did which is a large orange umbrella. Thank you for your artistic creation and making a rainy day become a lasting memory. Carol

Warren Keating Interviewed on The Candid Frame:

“Warren Keating is a painter who has based his popular overhead series on images that he has produced with a digital video camera. The result brings together the perspective of the camera with the nuance control of light and color that can only happen on canvas.” - Ibarionex Perello

Comments About This Piece

This oil painting was inspired by the view from my hotel room balcony of a Parisian woman wearing winter boots running in the rain on St. Germain. I used my signature Pixel Impressionist brushstrokes to create the movement of the figure and suggest the texture of the wet concrete, while creating a contemporary styled figure painting. This expressive work is on a gallery wrapped canvas with finished edges. It comes varnished and ready to hang.

Oil painting

Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!

Stretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas artwork is labeled stretched, it means the canvas has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched canvases typically do not require framing.
