Suzanne Massion
Hampshire, Illinois

When the land changes, Suzanne Massion’s paintings will remind you of the way it once was. She drives the back roads through the tall grass prairies and farmland of her native Illinois, stopping to paint en plein air when the moment strikes. She feels like she’s in a race to save a disappearing treasure as buildings burn or open space is paved over. Suzanne donates a portion of her sales to fund local land conservation efforts.

The response an artist wants most to hear is that a collector loves their new acquisition. Sure do wish I could see how you framed it and how it looks in your fireplace setting.

E Culpepper, due to your inquiry regarding an interest in my paintings in a different price range, I've submitted 5 new pieces and UGallery listed them today. I appreciate your interest and comment.

Suzanne Massion 2/15/2015 | 2:07 PM

Why thank you for your interest. It has encouraged me to submit more work to UGallery in your price range. The new pieces are oils on medium textured artist canvas and are matted and have a backing. Keep checking my artwork on UGallery and let me know what you think.

E Culpepper 2/15/2015 | 12:05 PM

I would like to own, and enjoy one of your paintings. Do you have any in the 300 to 400 dollar range? Once again, beautiful work.

Suzanne Massion 2/14/2015 | 10:18 AM

Thanks so much for taking a look. Prairie Crossing is an actual community in Illinois, where homes are clustered together, allowing large open space areas to exist. They do controlled burns in the spring. Exciting to see the prairie come back each year.

E Culpepper 2/14/2015 | 1:23 AM

Your paintings are so awesome! I can't stop looking at Prairie Crossing. Thank you!

Thank you for taking a look. I am new to UGallery and yours is a first comment for me.

Comments About This Piece

This piece depicts an old dairy barn’s last stand. The cows are long gone and the milk house and windmill are derelict. A remnant of fencing borders a pasture now overgrown in dry grasses. Perfect! Time to paint! The painting is varnished and in an 11” x 14” archival matt and backing, allowing for easy framing. It is sleeved in plastic to protect the matting until framed.

Oil painting

Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!

Unstretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas is labeled unstretched, it means the canvas has NOT been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Unstretched canvases typically require stretching or framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
