Mary Pratt
Buford, Georgia

Mary Pratt, a Georgia based artist, is known for her tranquil oil paintings that capture the unique personalities of both people and animals with a jovial poise. Her soft and ethereal color palette is invigorated with the zest of bright colors. These colors, combined with her compositional choices, rekindle a childhood magic and joyful emotional response. From John Singer Sargent and Japanese geishas to nostalgic family memories and the state of Georgia, her style is nuanced by a range of inspirations. Her fascination for the beauty of the Japanese geisha pervades particularly in her paintings of female figures. The personal edge that Mary brings to each painting alters and enhances recognizable subject matter, cultivating an imaginative visual experience.

I am seriously eyeing the Geisha Trio. I already own "snowbirds" and "valentine" and after a few glasses of wine, am hoping to add the Trio to my collection. It is absolutely stunning and my favorite work of yours so far.....I better get to that wine before someone else snatches that painting. :-)

Love this painting! It's hanging in my living room and have already received lots of compliments. I see something new each time I look at it. A friend and I were discussing the woods-like background and he commented it could also be a city background. I can now see both. Love the cardinal, thank you so much!

Mary: Your "Two Geisha" is a remarkable painting. It's the only pictorial equivalent to the color harmonies of Matisse, especially during his "Fauve" period - your color instinct is truly very rare and to be celebrated . . . keep painting . . . . more and more!!

Hi P Neerdaels, Thanks so much! The painting of the bird and nest sold. It was a 5' x 6'. I think it is possible to work through Ugallery to set up a commissioned piece. Perhaps even see the colors of the room to insure that the painting will fit. I could also paint another bird and nest and upload it in the new art and you could decide that way. Again, thanks for contacting me.

P Neerdaels 5/17/2013 | 9:55 AM

Mary, Love your work! I briefly saw a large picture of a bird in a nest done by you (sorry didnt pick up on the name of the piece). After just a short period of time it was gone from this site. I live in a cottage designed home with blue/green as the primary color on the walls and was unsure of the color within the picture whether it would get lost on the wall. Difficult to get a true read online. Would love to see similar work by you. There are many many fabulous artists but I have found I enjoy your work the very most.

Mary Pratt- I received your beautiful "Red" on Monday and when I walk into my living room, where she hangs, it literally takes my breath away. You have such a lightness to your painting. While it is a rather large painting, it is delicate and airy and she is beautiful, in another world-ly way, walking among the lanterns. I very much appreciate, no love, owning "Red" and having a piece of your wonderful work.

Comments About This Piece

Working from vintage photographs I created this scene depicting a swimmer wading in water. Dramatizing the color, I applied thick layers straight from the tube. This piece is on a gallery wrapped canvas and the painting continues around the sides. The work comes ready to hang.

Oil painting

Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!

Stretched linen

Linen fabric is the preferred surface for paintings. Linen is favored over cotton for its strength, durability and archival integrity. Linen is a rare surface in the United States because of its high cost. When a linen artwork is labeled stretched, it means the linen has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched linen artwork typically does not require framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
