Judy Barie
Sewickley, Pennsylvania

Judy Barie’s abstract work is made up of an arrangement of painted birch wood panels bolted together to create one surface. The assorted rectangles are fitted together like a puzzle, resulting in a final geometric composition with negative space along the edges. Judy creates the arrangements first, and then paints the panels with controlled pouring techniques. Once the painting starts, she often moves around the panels, looking for the right balance of color and form. She hand paints geometric patterns on at least one panel for each piece. The soft patterns highlight the bold color fields of the other panels, and are reminiscent of fabric or quilt making. Judy achieves a very smooth, inviting and classical sense of composition. The eye effortlessly moves clockwise or counterclockwise around the picture plane. Each piece is evocative of something different, whether it is a cityscape, the seasons, or the ocean; the work imitates and projects something natural and calm.

Comments About This Piece

This piece is made up of combined birch wood panels, which have been bolted together to create one painting. The panels are painted in oil with beautiful color fields and geometric patterns.

The painting has finished edges and comes ready to hang.

Oil painting

Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
