Jingshen You
Xiamen, China

Flowers have long been used in both Western and Eastern art as a symbol of joy and beauty. Jingshen You blends a traditional Chinese style with European Impressionism to capture the ethereal beauty of nature. With muddled, relaxed shapes that mirror the effect of ink or watercolor paints, his sunflowers and water lilies are rendered in a quick, loose style. The work is soft, cool, and atmospheric. Water lilies are stacked on top of each other, floating and dripping across the canvas. Their delicate disarray is lighthearted and whimsical. The sunflowers flank a small trail heading off into the horizon, inviting the viewer into the scene. Jingshen’s inspiration comes from his Chinese culture, and his father who was also an artist. His work exudes a strong sense of pride and appreciation for his heritage. However, the flowers represent a universal simplicity. Jinshen chooses flowers as his subject matter because they make him happy, and this simple joy is projected in the paintings.

Comments About This Piece

This splendid golden mountain is located in Tibet. I was able to see it when I paid a visit to Tibet last autumn. It is so impressive!

PLEASE NOTE: Due to its size, this painting will ship from the artist's studio in China un-stretched and rolled in a tube. The detail images are just to give a sense of how the work will look as a finished piece.

Oil painting

Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!

Unstretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas is labeled unstretched, it means the canvas has NOT been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Unstretched canvases typically require stretching or framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
