Louis Bispo
Oceanside, California

Louis Bispo finds people endlessly entertaining, hence his affinity for portrait painting. His intent is to paint the people of his region with the dignity of a Renaissance or Baroque aristocratic portrait. His style, which he dubs “loose realism,” is quick, spontaneous, fresh, and expressive. Louis grows plants to make his own natural dyes and inks using historic recipes. As a result, earthly colors make up most of his color palette.

Comments About This Piece

In painting this portrait of one of our local models, I was immediately drawn to the scarf she wore, from which the painting takes its title. I used more color in the skin tones than usual, as her colorful clothing demanded it. The piece is on canvas board, so it will require framing for display.

Oil painting

Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!

Canvas board

Canvas board is a thin, flat panel of either particle board or cardboard wrapped in canvas. If not already framed, most canvas board work will require framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
