Julia Bright
Boulder, Colorado

Julia Bright bases her still life paintings on 17th century French and Dutch art methods, which means that her process is very time-consuming and deliberate. She uses hand-ground oils, birchwood supports, and maroger medium, a thick gel that is mixed into the paint to keep it from running off the panel and to speed the drying process. Similar to the Old Masters she admires, Julia is preoccupied with light and how it affects the objects she paints. Her watermelons and pumpkins are all the more enticing for it, as the light dances across the forms, altering the color and providing depth. Julia emigrated to the U.S. from the former Soviet Union when she was a teenager. Her passion for painting was undoubtedly developed as a child visiting the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, where the great works of Chardin and Ingres mesmerized her.

I think in the future we are going to see that you are considered a master. I love the energy and color and the subject matter in all your things. I can't help it, I have a favorite and it's "The Nest"!

I am so excited to be the newest member of the UGallery Artist Community! Please check out my paintings here:http://www.ugallery.com/ProductList.aspx?RC=1&Search=julia+bright My medium of choice is oil, and I am primarily a still life painter, although I do occasionally stray into figure, landscape and animal painting as well. I am inspired by the Dutch Masters, and my paintings are based on 17th century methods and materials. In fact, the boards, paints and mediums I use have all been handcrafted in small batches by artisans around the country. I welcome your feedback and questions about my work - talk to me! Here is to painting, collecting, and living life to the fullest! Julia

Comments About This Piece

As always, my inspiration for this piece is the movement of light across the canvas, and how various colors and shapes work together to unify the painting and create a mood of tranquility and peace. The pumpkins in this still life come from my pumpkin patch, and were my first experiment in pumpkin growing. As always, I paint only from life, and use hand-ground oils, hand-made birch board, and Maroger medium, the formula of which is based on 18th century recipe of Maroger. This piece is on a wood board and will need a frame for display.

Oil painting

Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!

One-of-a-kind

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
