Artist

Janet Howard-Fatta
Warwick, New York

It would be hard not to think about Vincent Van Gogh’s sunflowers when looking at Janet Howard-Fatta’s still lifes . Janet’s paintings embody the same sense of life and hope within the freshly gathered flowers, contained in a vase like a gift. However, Janet’s pieces are bold and contemporary. The bright warm colors, flat planes of receding space, and interesting angles take from some of her favorite west coast artists, such as Richard Diebenkorn and David Hockney. Janet even paints some of her bouquets beside the pool (a little homage to Hockney), capturing the dance of light on the water in impressionist brushstrokes. Janet, herself a gardener, clearly falls in love with each bouquet she paints. This appreciation and awe is captured in every painting, each one feeling like the precious, ephemeral height of a romance.

Comments About This Piece

This may have been the first of the series from last summer. I have been painting zinnias for a few years, but this is the first in the series that I referred to Diebenkorn for my compositions. I sketched out several, and then went with the most dynamic, while still staying in the world of illusion and form. I wanted to capture the warmth of the glowing sunlight on these zinnias in the summer sun. I accepted my marks of applying and wiping away, and allowing the color stain to remain on the gessoed panel and leave that as a final effect.

The painting is on a composite board. It comes ready to hang in a natural hard wood floater frame, and wired on the back. The frame has a clear matte polyurethane on it. The sides of the panel and the inside of the floater frame are painted black for a nice presentation.

Oil painting

Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!

Composite board

Composite board is a thin, flat panel of compressed wood. If not already framed, most composite board work will require framing.

One-of-a-kind

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
