Lisa Nielsen
Chapel Hill, North Carolina

There’s a certain innocent joy that comes through in Lisa Nielsen’s artwork. She finds beauty in the everyday and often ordinary, whether it’s painting a pretty girl in the garden or spending time with her daughter at Chipotle - and let’s face it, what isn’t beautiful about a burrito bowl? Lisa likes to say she captures moments in the journey of life. What we see in her art is all part of her life philosophy: to be still, to breathe, to exhaust the small moment.

One of my sweet patrons returned and bought another painting from me. Really honored and thrilled the first painting made her happy enough to come back for another. Thank you, thank you for that! What a day brightener and a gift!

Hello Lisa…I just recently bought your painting "Still." I love the colors you developed in the oil and the the interplay between what's real and what's abstract. In your bio I noticed you work at the Durham VA…I'm a disabled veteran and I get my medical care from the same facility…I also live in Chapel Hill…small world!!! Thank You!

Hey Frank Thank you for your kind words about my art. It means a lot to an artist that someone enjoys your efforts. Truly. I have been reading that there is a trend for paintings that are gallery wrapped that people can just hang up on the walls. I think the simplicity of that makes a lot of sense and I can see why that is attractive to buyers. One thing about the way that I work is I might paint a piece a couple of times before I'm happy with it so tossing gallery wrapped canvases would a little tough to stomach! I did look online and saw something called Clearmont Zig Zag picture hangers. It says they are not made to hold a lot of weight but the little blue lady is less than a pound. Let me know what you think. Thanks again! Lisa

Hi Lisa- I really like your work and noticed that "Nude in Blue" was done on canvas board. Now I would want to hang it on a wall- not a frame for display. Is it possible for you to attach one of those metal devices (dont know the name) where I could just use a nail in the wall and hang the painting on the clip? Let me know- Thanks, Frank

Comments About This Piece

In this piece, I investigated shadow and light. I wanted to capture what light does when it touches skin and how it shows the folds in the fabric. In these shadows, edges and colors fade and blend together. Harmony is created. This painting is on a gallery wrapped canvas with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.

Oil painting

Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!

Stretched linen

Linen fabric is the preferred surface for paintings. Linen is favored over cotton for its strength, durability and archival integrity. Linen is a rare surface in the United States because of its high cost. When a linen artwork is labeled stretched, it means the linen has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched linen artwork typically does not require framing.

One-of-a-kind

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
