Artist

Olivier Payeur
Toulouse, France

Olivier Payeur is a classical painter; he starts with a solid drawing, refines the composition, uses traditional oil painting techniques, and works from models rather than photos. “My goal is to get powerful compositions. I like to experiment with colors and painting styles, including abstract elements,” he says. Before becoming an artist, Olivier worked as an engineer. He still occasionally returns to it and calls it his “vice.”

Comments About This Piece

Julie is not a professional model, but she loves to pose. This was her last pose before she had to leave the studio, and the drawing was left unfinished. I decided to complete it without her, and then made this painting. I reworked the composition many times, ending with a pleasant abstract background. This painting is on a composite board and will need a frame for display.

Oil painting

Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!

Composite board

Composite board is a thin, flat panel of compressed wood. If not already framed, most composite board work will require framing.

One-of-a-kind

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
