The words "IS. WAS. WILL BE." communicate that although Lincoln may be dead, what he did for America is still alive. He didn't follow popular opinion to get elected, he led and changed popular opinion and got elected. How may politicians have ever done that? There are many paintings of Lincoln, but they are all very traditional and old. I felt a strong need to create a modern portrait of him so that new generations could stop and think about who this great man actually was.
