Mandy Main
Rancho Mirage, California

Mandy studied Art and Art History at Stanford University and received an MBA in Arts Management from UCLA. Her work is shown in galleries across the west coast and sells nationwide and internationally. Mandy’s luminous paintings of the western landscape are informed by nature and capture a sense of place, but she takes great license in interpreting what is actually seen. The fleeting nature of light and clouds play center stage in her dramatic scenes. She works in series, usually six paintings at a time, executed in her studio where she paints in silence and total concentration. Mandy says she envisions the final creation before ever beginning a piece.

Thanks Sanjeev. The paintings are series of layers, some applied with brush, some with knives, and some with ragged on washes of color.

Being a learning raw artist myself, I liked the texture that is created in luminosity. Is it just through the brush that various shades of yellow are done? I am asking myself. Really interesting!!

The luminescence keeps me coming back. Your work is even more beautiful in my home.

Comments About This Piece

I was excited to spot this house, which is like a subject for an Edward Hopper painting. The house is in Oregon and is actually located on a country lane named Parson Road. I painted it in extra warm tones and with a radiating foreground to draw your eye into the painting. I exaggerated the slanting lines of shadow on the house to make the light the real subject of the painting. The overall effect is captivating, but calming. The painting is on a gallery wrapped canvas with finished brownish black edges. It comes ready to hang.

Oil painting

Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!

Stretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas artwork is labeled stretched, it means the canvas has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched canvases typically do not require framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
