Artist

Danny Griego
San Diego, California

Danny Griego enjoys infusing his works with a sense of mystery. In his compositions, he hopes to leave room for viewers to use their imagination. He believes "there is even beauty in the mundane." Danny oftentimes works alla prima, which means he completes a painting in one session without waiting for the paint to dry. During his free time, he enjoys working on things that involve a process, and he has been a home brewer since 1989. He currently lives in California. Fun fact: In 1992, he worked on the Olympic games in Barcelona, constructing and painting scenic elements for the opening ceremony. Since he didn't speak Catalan and no one spoke English, his team got jobs done mostly through hand gestures. He got the job by meeting someone at a bar!

Just had an awesome time at the Telluride Plein Air Festival. It was a week long event that featured 31 artists and their plein air paintings in and around Telluride. I made some sales which is great. I was also the winner of the quick draw competition. It's an event where all 31 artists paint in the same vicinity for 2 hours and the public are encouraged to attend and see the artists painting. At the end of 2 hours a winner is chosen and the paintings are auctioned off to the public. I was fortunate enough to sell my quick draw painting as well.

Clever name and cool painting. I get the sense a worker in a vest and hard hat are right around the corner.

Comments About This Piece

One of my favorite subjects to paint is a street scene. During the Telluride Plein Air Festival I captured this quaint little scene. I was really drawn to the two roads with two different heights converging to the lower left, but separated by the brick wall. There are a lot of interesting levels and angles here. Plus the cool blue/purple mountain in the background really sets it off. I actually went to this area to paint the old church, which is catty-corner to this view. But when I saw this preferred view, I instantly changed plans. This piece is on canvas board and will need a frame for display.

Oil painting

Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!

Canvas board

Canvas board is a thin, flat panel of either particle board or cardboard wrapped in canvas. If not already framed, most canvas board work will require framing.

One-of-a-kind

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
