Mark Nesmith
Beaumont, Texas

Some artists travel the globe seeking the wonders of the world for inspiration. Mark Nesmith finds the sublime in the everyday of Southeast Texas. He calls it “transcendence from a car window.” It could be a glimpse of the sky dancing, the ripples of a canal on his drive to work, or the silhouette of a tree while walking through the neighborhood. “Almost everything I paint is connected to memories of the places and the times I spent there with the people I love. That’s what remains with me over time.” Mark earned his B.F.A. in Studio Fine Art from Lamar University and also studied art at the University of North Texas. Fun fact: Mark teaches art at local schools in his spare time, everything from toddlers in Pre-K to high school fine art classes.

Hi Mark- I like your painting- "The Space Between" - and it just fits in the corner of my artwall. But tell me please if it is ready to hang- with a wire or just saw tooth device. Thanks, Frank

Comments About This Piece

I've stared at these two oaks outside my classroom in Port Neches, Texas all year thinking I should paint them. One day I watched the sun fight through the dark clouds of a dying storm. It was like a burst of fire in the sky. I held that image in my mind for weeks before it all came together and I started laying in the beginnings of this oil painting on canvas. This was painted in a flurry of impasto brushstrokes with thick, lush layers of color piled on top of each other. I wanted the focus to be on the incredible light and drama of the sky, so I kept details to a minimum and eliminated all the specifics of the scene like the parking lot behind the trees and the houses across the street. Paired down to the essentials this painting became a struggle between the solidity of the oaks standing against the overwhelming fiery onslaught of the sky. This oil painting is on a gallery wrapped canvas with finished black edges. It comes ready to hang.

Oil painting

Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!

Stretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas artwork is labeled stretched, it means the canvas has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched canvases typically do not require framing.
