Comments About This Piece
I collect these ginger jars because I love their unique shapes and I paint them quite often. Clipping off the extras flowers, leaves and stems as I was setting up to paint this arrangement of carnations, I noticed just how delicate the flowers looked next to the bold black solid structure of the jar and I felt that it created a wonderful sense of balance. It also had a wonderful sense of light and shadow so I decided to paint this piece as more of a still life composition instead of a classic floral arrangement. The clippings also seem to make a wonderful light value contrast against the dark background, which leads the viewer's eye throughout the piece. This piece appeared in the October 2013 issue of Southwest Magazine in the “Art of Arizona” section. Most of the piece was painted in one sitting using the “alla prima” or “wet-on-wet” technique, where layers of wet paint are applied on previous layers of wet paint. Holbein oil paints combined with Old Master Maroger medium were used in the process. Highlights, and a few of the finer details, were then further enhanced after the piece was dry. Thin glazes of paint were added to enhance the lighting effects. This piece is currently unframed and is not wired to hang. It has been varnished in a semi-gloss finish with Gamvar to protect it.
Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!
Masonite board is a thin, smooth panel of highly compressed wood. If not already framed, most masonite board artwork will require framing.
