Artist

Mandy Main
Rancho Mirage, California

Mandy studied Art and Art History at Stanford University and received an MBA in Arts Management from UCLA. Her work is shown in galleries across the west coast and sells nationwide and internationally. Mandy’s luminous paintings of the western landscape are informed by nature and capture a sense of place, but she takes great license in interpreting what is actually seen. The fleeting nature of light and clouds play center stage in her dramatic scenes. She works in series, usually six paintings at a time, executed in her studio where she paints in silence and total concentration. Mandy says she envisions the final creation before ever beginning a piece.

Mandy, my favorites are all of your paintings that are almost all cloud and sky, and just a little of the landscape. I'm not an art person, but I really love your paintings. Thanks

Thanks Sanjeev. The paintings are series of layers, some applied with brush, some with knives, and some with ragged on washes of color.

Being a learning raw artist myself, I liked the texture that is created in luminosity. Is it just through the brush that various shades of yellow are done? I am asking myself. Really interesting!!

K Webster 6/10/2012 | 12:56 PM

The luminescence keeps me coming back. Your work is even more beautiful in my home.

Nice work Mandy. I particularly enjoy Halcyon. Reminds me of the days of my youth, studying the beautiful cloud formations and dreaming of what was to come.

Comments About This Piece

In this serene contemporary landscape, clouds sweep across the sky above velvety green hills. Patches of light illuminate the foreground, revealing its sculptural features. The soothing blue and green palette adds to the sense of peace and calm.

This piece is on a gallery wrapped canvas with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.

Oil painting

Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!

Stretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas artwork is labeled stretched, it means the canvas has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched canvases typically do not require framing.

One-of-a-kind

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
