The natural world is the blue-print for my work while allusions to past and contemporary culture inform its development. I build up an aesthetic of duality through the hybridization of divergent approaches to art. My studio practice is labour-intensive as I get involved with materiality and techniques from the realm of traditional painting, craft, design and renovation. I rely preponderately on commercial tools such as blow torches and electrical sanders for the making of my paintings, typically human scale. In the tradition of Process art, I seek the presence of external variables such as natural physical properties -heat or friction for instance- to inject unpredictability in my art-making. As I stand witnessing organic processes is the idea of embracing chance and intervening with intuitive timing. In an interplay of randomness, intuition and conditioning, I attempt to build a visual language of formal analogies evocative of the notions of heritage and identity as cyclical,?ambiguous and unresolved entities. My recent work explores the assimilation of aerosol painting, pyrography and sanding on wood. In the series Turbulences, I investigate the possibilities when arbitrary gestures are set out to coexist with mechanical grid geometry. My interest lies in how our visual perception can be solicited and sustained by an impression of the ethereal derived from complex patterns and repetition. In the resulting imagery, I am suggesting a discoverable lattice of motifs emerging out of defacement and obscuration where allusions to natural phenomena act as allegories for the human experience.

It has been a very exciting week-end on Ugallery, two works from the "Turbulences" series have been acquired into private collections in New Jersey. Very pleased!

Love this work. The geometry and cross-hatching + the assymetry are lovely. Wishing you the best.

Comments About This Piece

"Turbulence 3" explores the hybridization of chance-derived abstract expressionism with linear hard-edge geometry. The end result is dynamic and discoverable grid imagery that engages our visual perception through a play of iridescence and optical effects. This piece is made of acrylic paint, oil paint, acrylic polymers, spray paint, and varnish on a gallery wrapped canvas with finished white edges. It comes wired to hang.

Mixed media artwork

Mixed media refers to an artwork that is created using several different types of traditional art media, for example oil paint, ink and collage. The specific media used for each mixed media piece on UGallery is listed in the notes section.

Stretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas artwork is labeled stretched, it means the canvas has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched canvases typically do not require framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
