Stacy Dynan
Redwood City, California

Stacy Dynan’s spontaneous impulse to stop inside a London gallery on her walk home from work quickly soared to dramatic, life-altering proportions. The then-telecommunications consultant became so transfixed by a landscape abstract by John Brown that she felt compelled to walk across the street and purchase her very first art supplies. “I had never held a paint brush before, but an hour later, I had a painting of my own,” she recalls. “To this day, I still don’t know how or why, but here I am.” She creates many textures, layers and glazes in her pieces. Through slight sanding, glimpses and surprises are uncovered, drawing the viewer into the canvas to uncover moments of the painting’s history. Fun fact: For college graduation Stacy’s parents bought her a backpack to travel for 6 weeks; she never returned. She stayed in Australia for 4 years, then moved to London before settling in the Bay Area.

Comments About This Piece

Along with the whimsical subject matter, I try to let the colors vibrate at a high level and generate a feeling of warmth and fun. Often described as dreamscapes, my paintings take you on a journey of emotions and places. I build up my canvases with multiple layers of paint and glazes. I often incorporate texture through molding paste and paper. Once I have finished creating the image, I then sand the painting to bring forward previous layers of color. This technique gives the painting a slightly distressed, but highly polished look that pulls you further into the art. This painting is on a gallery wrapped canvas with finished purple edges. It comes varnished and ready to hang.

Mixed media artwork

Mixed media refers to an artwork that is created using several different types of traditional art media, for example oil paint, ink and collage. The specific media used for each mixed media piece on UGallery is listed in the notes section.

Stretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas artwork is labeled stretched, it means the canvas has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched canvases typically do not require framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
