Tiffany Gholar
Chicago, Illinois

Tiffany Gholar’s mixed media artworks are produced with a variety of everyday materials, including cardboard, plastic and paper bags, and found art objects. She chooses her materials based on their textures, which inspire her to repurpose otherwise useless items into something new. She calls this style of working “Post-consumerism.” In post-war America, consumerism instantly inspired artists and spurred the Pop Art movement. Art about consumerism is often a critique of consumer society, repurposing advertising imagery or consumable goods into the work. Tiffany’s work is more about transformation; turning something mundane and discarded into something curious and appealing. Her pieces are made to hang on the wall but they have a sculptural quality, with materials composed to create texture and depth on the flat surface. Many of the pieces also have a luminescent quality, reflecting light off of the painted materials. The work is bright and celebratory, proof that our wasteful habits can be reimagined.
