Artist

Sheila Grabarsky
Waretown, New Jersey

Sheila Grabarsky is an abstract painter living and working on the New Jersey shore. She is known for her bold and expressive gestural brushstrokes, juxtaposition of contrasting colors, and spontaneity in her paintings. Sheila’s animated paintings have been compared to those of Vasily Kandinsky, the Russian painter and art theorist referred to as “the father of abstraction.” And, like Kandinsky, the essence of inner beauty and the potency of the human spirit are key factors in her art. Fun fact: Sheila’s work is featured in a 2016 movie called American Pastoral. The film, starring Ewan McGregor and Dakota Fanning, is set in post-war New York during the flourishing abstract expressionism movement.

Comments About This Piece

There was a lot of yarn stored in my studio. One day I had the idea to incorporate it into a painting. The title came from the fact that I had a fear of flying, which I overcame. This is one of seven works in a Hollywood movie to be released this year, American Pastoral, based on the Philip Roth novel. This painting is made of acrylic paint and strands of yarn on a gallery wrapped canvas. The painting continues around the sides, and it comes ready to hang.

Mixed media artwork

Mixed media refers to an artwork that is created using several different types of traditional art media, for example oil paint, ink and collage. The specific media used for each mixed media piece on UGallery is listed in the notes section.

Stretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas artwork is labeled stretched, it means the canvas has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched canvases typically do not require framing.

One-of-a-kind

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
