Artist

Steven Prewitt
Boone, North Carolina

To Steven Prewitt, the paint, the canvas, the pencil, the charcoal, the chalk, and the collage all contribute to the "life'' of a picture. His artistic process is full of different stages, including sketching, painting small pieces, and then painting larger pieces. His painting style is akin to Jackson Pollock’s action painting, and he frequently moves, dances, smiles, laughs, sings, and prays while painting. Fun fact: Steven likes watching NASCAR, Tarheel Basketball, and the Mannings playing football.

Several months later, and lots and lots of time, effort, work, thought, expense... the studio is a working space! It is wonderful and better than dreamed! TONS of space, its approx 1000 square feet per floor. The bottom level is the garage/car park and wood/building/workshop area. The second floor is enough space for 6 - 10 visiting artists to spread out, work, collaborate, fellowship. Plenty of wall space and good lighting makes a gallery - like atmosphere. If you have seen pictures of Willem DeKooning's studio, that was my inspiration... though mine is smaller, its a wonderful, quiet work-space in the woods of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Deer, wild turkey, squirrels, crows, and every few years a couple black bears have been seen in my woods. Perfect.

Building my own studio, from the ground up! I broke ground just before Thanksgiving 2015. 3 - plus months later I am due for an inspection today before I can pour foundation footers (or footin's as they say around here in the N.C. Blue Ridge Mountains). Massive rocks excavated, overwhelming amounts of dirt moved, every utility coming into my house being damaged or moved... having already rented 2 different track hoes, 2 jack hammers, and a back hoe, its been an odyssey of work and learning. I'm hoping for good news today. It should get easier from here.

"A work of Art goes through many phases of development, but in each phase it is always a work of art. Therein lies the importance of sketches." Hans Hoffman

I worked on several paintings last week. I've been inspired by Matisse's line drawing, design and colors. Johns fast, encaustic brushwork. Kandinsky's dance and abstraction. I will add images soon!

Comments About This Piece

My Figure Studio series begins at a monthly open studio held at a nearby university. I take several canvases and papers and quickly get a gesture drawing down. "Figure VII" began as a charcoal/graphite drawing. Back in my studio, I added collaged paper, stenciled lettering and acrylic paint in fast, expressive colors and brushwork. I consciously left out details and added abstractions. This piece has 2-3 coats of acrylic gloss varnish for protection. It is a work on paper, therefore it will need to be framed in order to hang.

Mixed media artwork

Mixed media refers to an artwork that is created using several different types of traditional art media, for example oil paint, ink and collage. The specific media used for each mixed media piece on UGallery is listed in the notes section.

Paper

Paper is a very common surface for all types of artwork, including photography, printmaking, drawing and painting. Art paper varies in thickness and color. Read the notes section to learn more about the paper used to create this artwork. If not noted as framed, most paper artwork will require framing.

One-of-a-kind

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
