Diane Abt
Oakland, California

Diane Abt incorporates her study of Asian calligraphy into her artworks, whether in sparse black-and-white works or more complex, dream-like compositions. She currently lives in California and had a 35-year career in journalism before transforming her life-long hobby of art-making into her second career. She takes inspiration from artists like Paul Klee, Robert Motherwell, and Francisco Goya. Fun fact: she lived and worked in Japan for more than seven years.

I bought Sexual Healing and Gotham. Both are very interesting and look very professional. Diane's work is multi-layered. You won't get bored with it. Her frame work is precise. The woman is fascinating.

Comments About This Piece

This piece was made by combining oil monotyping, sumi ink, oil pastel, graphite, and collaged elements on BFK Rives paper. The paper has two deckled edges. The Exile series explores the consequences of being uprooted from one’s place, one’s home, one’s culture. I’ve tried to reveal both the agony which human beings suffer, and the renewal they often discover when they choose, or are forced, to leave their place.

Mixed media artwork

Mixed media refers to an artwork that is created using several different types of traditional art media, for example oil paint, ink and collage. The specific media used for each mixed media piece on UGallery is listed in the notes section.

Paper is a very common surface for all types of artwork, including photography, printmaking, drawing and painting. Art paper varies in thickness and color. Read the notes section to learn more about the paper used to create this artwork. If not noted as framed, most paper artwork will require framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
