Artist

David Skillicorn
New Salem, Massachusetts

David Skillicorn's evocative atmospheric abstract paintings are a reflection of the natural world. He strives to create something authentic, at once sensitive and meditative, yet resonate and contemporary. His paintings are not literal landscapes per se, but rather rich atmospheric explorations, often evoking the sea and the horizon, or intimate closeup views of the natural world. His Adagio series is named after the musical term, which instructs players to perform slowly, gracefully, and with ease. It is those sensibilities which Skillicorn hopes to convey in these quiet, resonate oil and fabric paintings done in the spirit of Mark Rothko. In the Fantasia series, Skillicorn takes a different approach. The colorful luminous works in this series begin with large abstract oil paintings Skillicorn creates in his studio. With archival dyes, intimate details of the paintings are infused into metal plates or wooden blocks, resulting in bold original works of art. Skillicorn’s studio practice is a combination of instinct, intuition, and spontaneous expression, carefully balanced by years of technical training and continual editing as a painting takes shape. In the end he hopes these paintings will resonate with others and bring a bit of color and beauty into their lives.

Pleased to have one of my larger paintings, (Memory I, 60" x 60"), included in the national juried show "Patterns", at the Attleboro Arts Museum for the month of July. Also very pleased that they placed the painting very prominently on it's own wall, facing the Museum's main window to the outside.... in a way having my work represent the show to the outside world. Very nice and much appreciated. Some pictures on my web site, www.davidskillicorn.com

Comments About This Piece

In this series I am responding to surfaces altered by time; old walls, ancient frescos, the landscape itself, aged and eroded. In each painting I work toward a unique topography, created by layers of paint, natural pigments, graphite, ink and other mark making applied, then selectively scraped off and excavated to reveal layers beneath. The process is repeated until the right atmosphere is created and the painting is resolved. The residual fragments of color which emerge suggest a story of change, and mark the history of the painting's creation over time.

This piece is made with oil and acrylic on a gallery wrapped canvas with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.

Mixed media artwork

Mixed media refers to an artwork that is created using several different types of traditional art media, for example oil paint, ink and collage. The specific media used for each mixed media piece on UGallery is listed in the notes section.

Stretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas artwork is labeled stretched, it means the canvas has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched canvases typically do not require framing.

One-of-a-kind

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
