Millennia ago, the exacting and complicated chemistry of indigo dyeing was discovered independently in many places around the world. We do not know how. Its capriciousness has led to different rites, rituals, superstitions, fiercely defended secrets, and even allegations of black magic. Its beauty, depth, and complexity have led me to create this body of work. I have developed my own technique in which papers are folded, dipped into vats of plant derived indigo dye, and moved in different ways to make the images. I seek to create grace, serenity, and refuge, while searching for a mere mark that resonates deep within us. I hope these portrayals of ideal landscapes suggest the ecologically sound world that we remember, dream about, and long for.
