My artwork resonates with celebration and joy. The amalgamation of my carefree, happy childhood in my native country of India, my various international travels, and my life now in beautiful California with my husband and son, have exposed me to bounty, beauty and blessings, which inspire me to dream big and bold. The colors and styling of my pieces evoke that sense of joy, amazement, wonderment and gratitude and that is what I aspire to share with the viewer.
My current body of work is largely inspired by nature, particularly the Californian landscape and is a celebration of its splendor and magnificence; this could be the boundless horizons or wide open landscapes, the beauty of the changing seasons, pretty wildflowers blooming proudly on the side of a busy road, the dreamy coastal towns dotted along the beautiful Pacific Ocean, or the mix of the natural and manmade energy, vibrancy and hustle of sunny San Francisco and many such wonderful, special encounters that I have on a daily basis and get to translate onto canvas. Some of my work is also a visual representation of my innate passion and drive to attempt, enjoy, achieve, and succeed, in my relatively new journey as an artist.
However, rather than striving for objective realism, I enjoy recreating these experiences, and editing these to their most essential and imperative elements. I like to think of my work as abstract realism; I let my observations and encounters act as a point of departure for abstracting, and rather than focus on traditional realism, I sidestep that for a more minimalist, representational and modern composition to hopefully evoke an almost meditative and physical response to that work. It is also my hope that my work can entice nostalgia and dreaminess and an opportunity for the viewers to conjure up their own stories about the places and subjects in my work.
I enjoy the lack of rules in art which makes my work free flowing, uninhibited, bold and colorful. I love the freedom of big, bold, tactile strokes and multilayering that oil painting allows, to create my richly textured pieces. My painting is a mix of abstract and semi abstract portrayals in vibrant and bold colors.
I usually start with just an idea as a roadmap and then rely on instinct to carry my work forward from there. I never sketch, just let the paint and the strokes guide me to accomplish my vision and portray that on canvas for me to share with everyone. This makes the whole process from inception to completion very exciting, spontaneous and fresh for me and my hope is that the viewer can share in my excitement. I take art seriously and this has always made me approach my paintings with intuition, awe and respect.
