Artist

Yaron Dotan
Los Angeles, California

Yaron Dotan has only ever had vision out of one eye. Because of this he does not see the world three-dimensionally, and often questions what he sees in relation to what others may be seeing. His paintings explore perception, and the line between reality and illusion. Working with acrylic paint and India ink, Yaron creates surreal pieces using hard edged lines and design elements to mask the representational elements. To find the sleeping woman or a man’s stoic face, the viewer must look past the vortex of layered lines, splitting the image into many pieces. There is an emotional layer to the work, as Yaron explores how human relationships are often constructed around our perceptions. Even in the most intimate of connections, we may find ourselves surprised by the motivations and thoughts of other people who we thought we understood. We can only see through our own set of eyes, and this is limiting. However, this also makes us human, curious and mysterious, pulsating with possibilities like the vibrations of many dissecting lines.

Comments About This Piece

What does it mean to look into the face of a god? For a moment you may think that you have a command over what you are seeing, until your senses are taken over by an illusion. Your eyes go back and forth between the illusion and the image, never fully at home with either.

I made this image using india ink on a painted panel. First I drew a depth illusion and then the abstracted image of a head over the illusion's pulsations.

This drawing is on a cradled wood panel with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.
