Annie Darling
Cape Elizabeth, Maine

For Annie Darling, the art is all about the process, the paint, her mood, and the moment. She does not know what the outcome of a piece will be when she begins, and because of this her work is about exploration and discovery. Her paintings are layered, textured, and colorful. Some pieces contain more than 30 layers, or several “almost paintings,” as Annie describes it. Annie paints with wax, which is known as encaustic painting. Hot wax containing pigments is applied in layers to a cradled wood surface. This is an extremely tactile process, and she reworks pieces by adding and removing wax until she is satisfied with the final result. She also uses an assortment of tools, such as an awl or a metal cake baker frosting tip, to carve and create defined markings in the wax. Annie worked as a graphic designer for many years, and her strong understanding of composition and color is evident in her fine art. With each finished piece, Annie has a story that accompanies the artwork. Although, her process begins unplanned and the result is an abstracted view, the final meaning is quite particular and real.

Comments About This Piece

They say imitation is the highest form of flattery. Well, I really admire Maine artist Clint Fulkerson's line drawings. They are amazing! And so I created a few pieces that reflect my admiration for his work. I give him credit for inspiring me on so many levels. He's a technical genius (me, not so much) but this work reminded me of my mom (you can read the story of why on the back of the painting) so I named it after her: Dorothy's Sky.

This encaustic artwork is on a cradled wood panel with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.

Encaustic artwork

Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The hot liquid/paste is then applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials can be used. Metal tools and special brushes can be used to shape the wax before it cools, or heated metal tools can be used to manipulate it once it has cooled on the surface. Other materials can be encased, layered or collaged into the surface, using the encaustic medium to adhere them to the surface.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
