Artist

Fleur Spolidor
San Carlos, California

Fleur Spolidor, a San Francisco based artist, creates both digital and acrylic paintings that set Alice, from Alice in Wonderland, against the backdrop of contemporary San Francisco. The nostalgic widely known figure becomes entwined in the local history, politics, and current events. A fictionalized and surreal extension of Fleur herself, Alice enacts the realities faced by residents of any modern metropolis. While her paintings are representational and topical, the elements of adventure book whimsy and indelible childhood associations offer a lasting personal connection. She reflects her own French background through distinct Parisian delicate humor and traces of the 19th century French political cartoonist, Honoré Daumier.

Comments About This Piece

Sisterhood is about growing up together, sharing the same interests, and looking in the same direction. It's the precious time with your siblings or best friends. It's what makes everything worthwhile, the help when going through rough times.

My digital work follows the same process of layering as my work on canvas. I research and download different types of papers, printed paper from newspapers, magazines or books, but I also take photographs of crumpled papers or colored papers with interesting lines or shapes. I work on my iPad, using Procreate, a very advanced painting app designed for mobile devices and intended for professional artists. It offers a large range of effects and brush qualities that I really enjoy. I also like this technique because it is a zero waste technique, everything is virtual, no paper, no paint, no mess.

Limited Edition

Certain pieces of artwork on UGallery, mostly photography and printmaking, are labeled as either limited edition or open edition. Pieces that are in a limited edition are produced in a set limited quantity. Open edition artworks are not limited in quantity and can be reproduced indefinitely. In both cases, each piece in the edition is identical and is considered an original. Limited edition works are generally more valuable because of the limited number available. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
