Fleur Spolidor
San Carlos, California

Fleur Spolidor, a San Francisco based artist, creates both digital and acrylic paintings that set Alice, from Alice in Wonderland, against the backdrop of contemporary San Francisco. The nostalgic widely known figure becomes entwined in the local history, politics, and current events. A fictionalized and surreal extension of Fleur herself, Alice enacts the realities faced by residents of any modern metropolis. While her paintings are representational and topical, the elements of adventure book whimsy and indelible childhood associations offer a lasting personal connection. She reflects her own French background through distinct Parisian delicate humor and traces of the 19th century French political cartoonist, Honoré Daumier.

Comments About This Piece

Reaching for the Moon over San Francisco is a poetic piece. In a world where everything seems upside down, we still have dreams of a better life, for our family and our loved ones.

My digital works follow the same process of layering as my work on canvas. I research and download different types of papers, including printed paper from newspapers, magazines, or books. I also take photographs of crumpled papers or colored papers with interesting lines or shapes. I’m currently using the painting app “Procreate”. It offers a large range of effects and brush qualities. I really appreciate this technique, as it is a zero waste technique. Everything is virtual; no paper, no paint, no mess.

This fun thing with this work is that it can be hung either way, as it is displayed here, or flipped the other way around.

Limited Edition

Certain pieces of artwork on UGallery, mostly photography and printmaking, are labeled as either limited edition or open edition. Pieces that are in a limited edition are produced in a set limited quantity. Open edition artworks are not limited in quantity and can be reproduced indefinitely. In both cases, each piece in the edition is identical and is considered an original. Limited edition works are generally more valuable because of the limited number available. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
