The environment is an integral part of the Coney Island series shown here. The majority of my work is composed with a prominent skyline. While the people represented in my paintings are from direct observation, my skies are mercurial in that they do not correspond to the environment in which the people exist. This contradiction lends itself to the reality that we, as a people, cannot control our environment. My goal with the Coney Island series is to create a sense of nostalgia for the viewer. I want to bring places to people, allowing viewers to make a connection not only to the work, but also to the environment.
The concept of Bugle Series arose from the way we live. Our lack of sustainability and constant overdevelopment leads to building structures that cannot be supported both physically and economically. Some of the paintings in this series depict bugle cities growing on top of other bugle cities because I want the viewer to get the sense that the bugles have taken on an intrinsic ability to reproduce. In many respects the bugles represent our greed and desire to consume.
