The Thing
|
AAAHHH! The Thing is coming! No, not that one. The Thing is a new fine art subscription service that delivers an art object to your door once a quarter. As ARTINFO describes it, it is “kind of like a fruit-of-the-month club for art loversâ€.
For $120 a year plus shipping, subscribers receive four artworks that somehow incorporate text. For example, Issue #1 (pictured right), which was sent out in September of last year, is a standard pull-down window shade with the choice of two printed slogans. One reads, “If this shade is down, I’m begging your forgiveness on bended knee with tears streaming down my face,†and the other, “If this shade is down, I’m not who you think I am.â€
The company was founded by two art students who met in UC Berkeley’s MFA program. They conceived of The Thing as a periodical and refer to themselves as editors. Each year, they select four artists, writers, musicians, or filmmakers to create the artwork.
I think this is a wonderful concept. It gives people the opportunity to experience the work of a number of different artists and styles at a very nominal cost. This truly is art for all. I look forward to seeing the progression of this company.Labels: art, the thing

Measure Twice, Hammer Once
|
I grew up with a mother who owns a gallery and works as an interior designer. From an early age, I learned the importance of properly displaying artwork, and how difficult that can actually be. The position of a painting or photograph on a wall can have a huge impact. Too high, too low, crooked—these issues can really change the effect of a piece.
I speak to customers regularly who are unsure of how to properly hang their purchases. I share with them tips that I learned from my mother and while hanging shows in the student gallery in college. For some time, I have wanted to write a sort-of cheat sheet to give people. And then today, one of my business partners sent me a link to a Chicago Tribune story from Sunday on hanging artwork. For anyone with questions, this is an excellent guide. I couldn’t say it any better. And just remember, when all else fails, there is always spackle!Labels: art
