Curator Review
artist statement

I find emotion and meaning in the colors and patterns of the natural world. My work captures the beauty of that still, eternal moment in time we sometimes experience – that intake of breath – when we suddenly look at the familiar in a new way, and we open our eyes to the energy and wildness of nature.

I use the motif of trees frequently in my work, a subject I have been drawn to all my life. Trees and woods have always been objects of beauty and mystery. They are entangled in many of society’s myths and legends. They represent a lack of regulation, a certain freedom, a purity, as well as danger, sexuality and threat. As forms, they are sculptural and animistic, expressive to their very core as they interact with and are shaped by their surroundings. I see in each one a unique form and personality, a non-human consciousness that speaks to our deeper, less evolved selves.

These unexpected colors in familiar places and familiar forms composed in unfamiliar ways make the viewer question what they are seeing and interact with my pieces as they compare it to their own experiences.

I contrast geometric order and pattern representing an external and intellectual, cold consciousness with organic lines representing an internal emotional warmth. This arose from two aspects of myself – my own conflict between the emotional and rational/intellectual life, and also my frustration that so much of human experience of our world, and nature, is through pixels on a screen. My “organic pointillism” squares came from the idea of perception through pixels.

My natural abstractions never feature people in the landscapes, as I create a staged landscape for the viewer to walk through.

The viewer is the only person in my paintings; it is a private universe.

Ultimately, inevitably, all my works of art are self-portraits.

Light is at the core of my artworks, and the colors, textures and patterns I use have an emotional connection to particular times and locations in my life. The trees symbolize and describe the people around me, and the relationships that surround us and frame our point of reference.

My figurative works challenge the notion that anything about a person can be known merely through outward appearance. Most people have rich and secret inner lives, and aspects to their personality they never reveal, and it is this private interior I depict.

Dear Ted I can't tell you how thrilled I am that you like Snowstorm. It is a piece that is very dear to me, and it is wonderful to hear that it's found a good home. Art always looks so much better in real life: my paintings have so many subtleties that can't be captured in a photo. Thank you so very much! Alison

Alison, We're so happy with "snowstorm." the brushstrokes and close, intimate view of your painting are all that I hoped for. The full beauty of your paintings were only apparent once it arrived. You added a small piece of beauty to our world and I thank you for it. Ted

Dear Alison, Thank you so much for making your wonderful work, we are loving living with it and are now imagining how to place it in our new apartment, once we move back in. It's memory of bright light will keep us going through many long winters to come. Keep painting - we will be watching for new works in the future!

Beautiful work.

Thank you for your comment! Color is very important to my work - I simplify my forms to put emphasis on the colors. "Fall Trees" has particularly beautiful colors, on the trunk too, which almost looks like colored glass. I am glad you like it! Alison

beautiful artwork, love your use of colors - makes me wish it was the Fall again!
