My art expresses my experience of being part of the natural world, a profoundly joyful sensation for me. Growing up, the woods and nature were an escape for me, a place where I found privacy, protection, and at the same time, a connection with the universe. Through my art, I recreate these places of peace and beauty that so starkly contrasted my ‘real’ life as a child and young adult.

My works are inspired by my en plein air paintings, which I weave together with my memories of seeing the world as a child—a view that has few boundaries or preconceived expectations, and the colors, spaces, and emotions I remember. Colors I use may be from life, or from memories of colors I saw as a child, textures I remember, or locations. The trees represent the people that were around me and their relationship to me, their impact on me, and my reaction to them.

In my figurative work, I challenge the notion that a representative image can tell the viewer anything at all about the person, as most people have rich inner lives and secrets that are ultimately unknowable. My portraits show on the outside what is within.

I often focus on the overlooked details, the transient light effects, or a particular growth pattern on a tree. I draw attention to these elements, for in contemplating a single leaf, we can make as many connections as in contemplating an entire forest. This is how a child, in its complex simplicity, sees the world. How many people as adults take the time to lay on the grass and watch the leaves fly, the branches rock, or the stars move through the sky?

Dear Alison, Thank you so much for making your wonderful work, we are loving living with it and are now imagining how to place it in our new apartment, once we move back in. It's memory of bright light will keep us going through many long winters to come. Keep painting - we will be watching for new works in the future!

Thank you for your comment! Color is very important to my work - I simplify my forms to put emphasis on the colors. "Fall Trees" has particularly beautiful colors, on the trunk too, which almost looks like colored glass. I am glad you like it! Alison
